Last year, I believe, I wrote a blog post about my vision of the future of the BHO. It was, as most of my posts generally are, sarcastic, overblown and basically 75% fictional. Well, time has passed. But just so you know, even before that post, I have always taken the BHO seriously. I may not reflect that in my posts and summaries as I go out of my way to make our posts as entertaining as possible. The truth is, I have a mission, and whether or not I succeed in that mission is entirely up to you (as is the way of most things)! But regardless of what you think of the posts, my goofy style of writing leaves little room for actual sincerity. But honestly, I do care about Yahtzee, what we do and this blog, but even more than this I want other people to care about Yahtzee also. I want you all to see that there is a place on this tiny blue marble of ours for competitive Yahtzee and over the top blog posts. Yes, you may think I'm daft or overly romantic, but I don't care, I will continue to try until I am unable to try any longer, regardless of who might attempt to persuade me otherwise.
A natural side effect of taking this silly game of ours so seriously is that it comes with ambition. But what form of ambition? What do I hope to actually achieve with all this?
Well, my first ambition has already come to fruition, and if you keep up with the blog you may already know what that is. I wanted to get the greatest generation we have in our country (our children) interested in Yahtzee, something I succeeded in doing not so long back. I made Yahtzee Packs that could be given, free of charge to a school, so they could begin their Yahtzee journey autonomously. The packs also included links to the BHO so the parents of the recipients knew where these packs came from. I know that sounds selfish, but I assure you that the kids getting started in Yahtzee was at the forefront of my mind. After all, board games, as far as our youngest ones are concerned, are going the way of the Dodo! Believe me, if I had the resources to spread the word to children about Scrabble and Chess, I certainly would! But I am also not made of money! Either way, I consider this my first ambition complete. Woop!
I also want to grow the BHO's players. My idea to do this is to open up the BHO's most accessible Competition to anyone that wishes to play. So for the first time, the BHO's Head To Head Championship will be open to ANYONE that wants to play. Details will be coming soon, so keep your eyes peeled, but hopefully a bit of friendly Competition, along with a cash prize incentive, will be enough to convert a few Yahtzee skeptics!
My next ambition is probably the hardest, as far as I am concerned. And that is Yahtzee clubs. I've always loved the fact that if you like Scrabble/Chess/Poker or whatever, there is always somewhere you can go. You can get involved, get competitive, make some money (sometimes) and most importantly, meet new people. I have always wanted that for Yahtzee. Trouble is, I'm an anxious person. I love meeting new people and the potential for making new friends. The only trouble is getting me to that particular place initially so I can do those things. As such, it kind of holds me back from starting such a thing. I know I can email lots of places and set dates, I just don't want to let anyone down by organising such events then letting everyone down because my sillly rotten brain won't let me leave the house! It's a bit of a bind. Hopefully I can get over this, but in the interest of full disclosure, it probably won't be any time soon.
Finally, right form the very birth of the BHO I envisioned having enough members that they would create their own "factions" and each faction could play another and we could compete for factional trophies. Think of a pub's pool League. They play between pubs... that's kind of what I was thinking of. I don't know though. That was an early thought. But, if you throw enough mud at the walls, you see what sticks. If it does, it does, and you carry on. If it doesn't, it doesn't and you move on.
So we will see. Right now I am very happy. Our membership is up, our readership is up, the competitions we are holding now have cash prizes (although that was never the point) and we seem to be making our mark (with the schools). All this is to say that I am cautiously optimistic. Progress is slow, true, but it is always going in the right direction!!
UP!
