Well ladies and gentlemen. I am a happy man. But I'm not just a happy man, I'm also an incredibly proud man. For once in my life, I had an Idea, I executed that idea and I saw it through. Let me explain (in case you haven't been keeping up).
Roughly three months ago, I had an idea. I wanted to spread the Yahtzee word, get it out there and hopefully get more people interested. I'm not going to say my intentions were purely selfless; after all, the more people that are interested in Yahtzee, the more people will visit my site (and it's not like I wouldn't be directing them there either). But still, a good thing is a good thing (yes it is!).
Anyway, I spent many days thinking how best to do this. Then I struck upon the idea of making Yahtzee Packs for the wee young ones that have probably never even heard of Yahtzee. They would contain everything that you would need to get started playing Yahtzee; dice, rules, scorecards etc.
I loved this idea and so did my closest Yahtzee allies, so we proceeded with it. We used the BHO's earnings (entrance fees for the Leagues and Competitions) to pay for everything we needed. We got it all together and we were good to go (I might be simplifying it a bit for the sake of brevity).
Then it was just a matter of getting them out there. The most obvious choice was to hand them out at schools. Not me personally of course, but give them to a school to hand out. The first place I contacted first was my youngest daughter's school. Let me tell you, they were so interested they didn't reply to my email... twice. But as luck would have it, the second school I emailed, the second closest school to me, were very interested. In fact the deputy head that I spoke to is a bit of a Yahtzee player herself. I felt like I'd hit the jackpot. So we organised a time to drop off the Yahtzee Packs to their kids. They even asked for an extra couple of pack for their board games club, which I was more than happy to do! So we dropped them off and they were incredibly grateful! Now only time will tell if they were put to good use. I'm sure they will be.
So, what do I hope to get out of all this? Well, first and foremost I hope the kids get the most out of the packs I have given them and they learn to love our great game! Secondly, and much less importantly, I hope that the adults find their way to the BHO and decide to join in. In every pack I added a letter to the parents of the wee ones telling them how Yahtzee can be a great tool for learning, who we are and what we do. Will it amount to much? Who knows? All we can do is try.
So, that's it really. That's what happened and that's what we did. Will I do it again? It's a bit early to tell. Let's see how these packs go down first!
What I will say, despite it being my idea, I could not have achieved it if it hadn't have been for the fine members of the BHO and their valuable contributions. But I'm not just talking about money. Many weekend evenings were spent folding hundreds of pieces of paper to help assemble these packs. So thank you all, I love you dearly xxxxxx
