My Dice Collection - One For The Nerds - Part 1

Black & Gold. To me, these are two of the most complementary colours on this big blue spinning orb of ours! There are many, including members of the BHO that I play amongst on a weekly basis that would certainly disagree with this sentiment, but they can go suck on an exhaust pipe (ouch). Now don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not going to choose this colour combination for my living room. BUT, when used sparingly... with a touch of class, there is nothing like it!
These dice are the one's I call the OG's! But why? Were they the first set of dice I ever bought? The best? The sexiest? Well, no, no and... er... no! Absolutely NONE of the above! So, I hear you ask, why do I place so much stock in their existence? Good question.
Simply put, these bad boys have been with the BHO from the very beginning! I have played Yahtzee for many years (and this story is as old as time itself on this blog) but I got back into it roughly 3 years ago. I played with some sad excuses for dice to start with. Probably some that I found about the house, pulled from other (lesser) board games just to make up the numbers. But I like things that are mine and designated to one purpose. So I went on the hunt for some dice that would only be for me and only used for Yahtzee. Yeah, yeah, I know, a bit sad, blah, blah, blah...
Well, I happened upon a little independent board game shop in my local town called Dice, Dice Baby. Sadly it no longer exists, a bit like most brick & mortar stores these days. As I expected, 99.9999999% of the dice on offer were D20's and such, made for the purpose of role playing games. No use to me. But I dug around and eventually happened upon the above. They cost me the princely sum of three quid. Bargain. Long story slightly shorter, I bought them and have used them pretty much exclusively ever since.
I'm one of those kinds of people that like to have just one of anything and use that one thing until it is well used and has a really satisfying patina to it, so it has age and a story of it's own to tell. It's true that I have an obscene amount of dice, but until recently, those other dice were merely a collection. Something to be looked at, not used. And that's just the way it has been. But I have come to realise change can be a good thing and it's really not fair to deny my other dice a chance to do what they do best. They have just as much right to be played with as much as the ones I'm talking about do. What a nasty man I have been. So I've decided they're gonna get their own time in the sun, as is their God given right!
But anyway, back to the OG's. They will forever be my favourite dice and I will continue to use them, albeit with a reduced rota, until it is no longer practical or fair to use them any longer. When this dark day does arrive they will be awarded for their service by immortalised and displayed as THE dice that helped us create the BHO. And it's no more than they deserve!
