Does Size Matter? - How Big is Too Big... or Small?

If you are a man... or at least a Human that posesses them dangly bits that chafe on your thighs on a hot day, you will be very well accustomed to this question: "Does size matter?"
Well, today I am not talking about genetalia, I am talking about dice. This IS a Yahtzee blog after all you perverts!
Many will tell you that dice are dice and it doesn't matter and blah blah blah! Well, they obviously haven't been involved in a marathon End of Year Knockout Championship with the BHO! If they had, they would know that it absolutely bloody matters! If you're interested, let me walk you through WHY I think it matters. If you're not interested... then move on! It's okay! You won't hurt my feelings... you big meanie!!
At some point, long before I was a glimmer in my Dad's knackers, some psychopath thought it would be a good idea to manufacture sets of 5mm (sorry Americans, I'm English and the metric system rules) D6 dice. The reason for this I have never fully understood. I can understand the existence of most other sizes of dice, but I honestly see no use for 5mm dice, for Yahtzee or ANY board game! They feel like you're holding crumbs in your hand, if one accidentally falls on the floor while rolling, good look finding it and unless you have the eyesight of a Barn Owl you can't even see what you've bloody scored!! Pointless (or at least in my opinion)!
Then we have the 10mm dice. Double the size, half as annoying, but who wants to be even half annoyed at their gaming apparatus? Especially when their game isn't going to plan? They are a lot better, granted, but we can do so much better!
12mm dice are still on the wrong side of tolerable, but at a push... let's say you're playing Yahtzee for your loved one's life, they will pass. Mind you, in that situation, even 5mm dice... whatever! They're okay, just not optimal.
14mm dice. NOW we're getting there! Personally, I'm not a fan. BUT, I do understand that some people have dinky hands. I know a few myself. I can see how they could be more comfortable for the smaller Humans amongst us. But that doesn't stop me from whining every time we are forced to play with these piddly cubes! I'm not a monster though, so SOMETIMES I let then have their way... not often though...
This. This is where we hit the sweet spot, the Goldilocks zone, the perfect size; 16mm. I don't know why but those 2mm extra make all the difference. They just seem to fit in your hand (my hand) like you had been born with them! They seem to roll out of your hand like no other sized dice. Even the sound they make as they land on the board is satisfying, and just seems... correct... am I overthinking this? Of course I am! But I do that with every aspect of everything, so leave me alone!!
Now then. Unless you are going to attempt to play Yahtzee with some comedically huge foam dice that kids use to play those outdoor versions of Snakes and Ladders, there is only one other size you would really consider playing with. Those dice are the "Casino" dice, or more specifically "Craps" dice. These dice are 19mm and they are perfect for playing Craps as you only hold two. But try holding five of those bad boys! Cumbersome is the first word that comes to mind. Impractical is the second! I will say, though, genuine casino dice are beautiful and for any collector of dice, they are a must! Even though I don't have any yet... someday... someday...

So there ya have it, my personal thoughts on... of all things... dice sizes. But that is all they are, MY thoughts, my humble opinions, for what they're worth. As I have mentioned, it all depends on how you're built. You might have teency weency hands and prefer smaller dice or you may have huge basketball players hands and prefer larger dice. I don't claim that this post is the final word on the matter as it's an entirely personal thing. Also, it matters not whether you are rolling dice that you are comfortable with or not, it will not improve your chances of success one iota. A Yahtzee victory is contained within the dice and within your head, not your hands!
