There is a great irony to what I'm going to prattle on about. The BHO has quite the reliance on technology; we play weekly online Matches, we rely on technology when players can't make the Matches in person and for those that don't live close enough to attend the Matches in person. Plus, more than anything else, we rely on technology for these amazing, witty and superbly well written blog posts! Yes they are! So... nerrrr!
So, while it's true that it may seem a bit odd that I'm railing against technology when the BHO relies on it so much, but this is a nuanced subject... and I have my reasons. Let me explain!
Don't get me wrong, technology is a wonderful thing. The very concept of having the whole world at your fingertips is miraculous and something that is almost unanimously taken for granted these days! The trouble starts when people begin to live on their phones, or even worse, live THROUGH their phones. You know who I'm talking about, those people that can't go on holiday, out for a meal or even do something mundane in their house without having to make it a massive thing on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok! When I see these things I just feel like reaching through the screen, grabbing them and reminding them that they are missing out on what they are doing because they're too busy bloody filming it, photographing it or waffling on about it. But hey, I'm getting old, maybe it's just me!!
Let me ask you a question though, and it's okay, I've done it myself, but how much ACTUAL entertainment do you really get from these social media sites? I bet 90% of you just scroll through video after video for hours and hours just to burn away the hours! I know I'm guilty of this! But let me ask you another question; let's say you have scrolled and scrolled random videos on Instagram, TikTok or whatever. What percentage of those hours would you say was well spent? And I'm not even talking about doing other things! What I mean is, what percentage of the bilge you watched during them many many hours did you actually enjoy? From personal experience I can testify that 95% of the crap I see online is either the most uninteresting bilge on the planet, or just nonesense that will make no discernable difference to my life in any meaningful way! If you lot were honest with yourselves too, I think you would agree. Yes it kills an hour or two or three or four or five etc. But is it worth it?
So what is the alternative to this mind numbing and all pervasive activity? Well, you are reading a post from the BHO Yahtzee Organisation's Blog. What do you think I'm gonna say? YAHTZEE of course! But not really! There is so much more to life than trashy internet memes and cringey pranks. So my real point is, go outside, get off your phones, enjoy the world and other people... or play Yahtzee!
I would honestly love it if every reader of this post decided to put down their phone and pick up some dice. But do you know what would be even nicer? Walking somewhere... ANYWHERE without almost walking into some other twat because THEIR top priority is having their phone in their face rather than looking where they are going! Or, even better, find a hobby (not necessarily Yahtzee) that you can get involved with that makes you socialise, doesn't include technology and makes you actually talk to your friends face to face. In the nineties that comment would sound daft. These days it sounds like a pipe dream!
Now, I'm not a major fan of people. I struggle to socialise. But I know enough people that I'm comfortable with that I can spend my time with and when I'm with them, I don't have the urge to pick up my phone once! The same cannot be said for a lot of people. Not that they don't have enough friends, just that they can't stay off their bloody phones! For example, we could be playing a full on and intense League Match but there will be at least two thirds of the competitors that spend the time in between their rolls perusing shite on social media! Time that could be spent by considering their next roll or mastering their strategy! To me, they might disagree, but in my opinion, getting off the phone and concentrating on the Match at hand might improve their scores exponentially!! But even if you aren't playing Yahtzee, just getting off your phone and engaging with the world around you can be such a benefit; to you, and those around you!
I'm not saying that social media is the root of all evil... but boy has it stolen youth! Imagine what these whippersnappers could be doing if they weren't scrolling! They could be helping old ladies cross the road, feeding the homeless, building houses in Africa. Or they could be involved in kebab shop stabbings, happy slapping or members of Scientology. So yes there are pros and cons whichever way you look at it.
Either way, I guess my point, if I even have one, is just: BE PRESENT! Whatever happened to doing one thing at a time? Even when these younglings are with you, they aren't really! They're still keeping up to date with the latest meme or TikTok dance/trend. But... and this is an honest question, especially to those I know that are guilty of such things...
...can't that shit wait?!?! Your life would like a go with you!
