On the 15th of September, the Team Championship was born. It was borne out of necessity. You see, wrangling my family into one room at the same time is akin to herding cats. It's not easy.
So, my thinking was, let's take the players that are most likely to be present and play a little team championship so then at least we can get a competitive match in, even if it's not a league match. The actual league had been plagued by delays and I was beginning to get the shakes. This team championship would eventually offer its own set of problems, but, whatever, we'll get into that shortly.
The rules for a Team Championship are available on the BHO Rules and Regulations page, so if you want to know more, please go there. But we had gathered ourselves, we randomly chose our teams (using a spinning wheel app), which is fair (but not entirely necessary) and we decided to play to 10,000 points (cumulative, not "points" based - See Rules & Regs).
The teams are as follows:
- The Coke Heads - Named not for any salacious reason, but for their love of the tar coloured soft drink - Members: Lee Hoggarth & Kerrie Bush.
- Rusty Flakes - So called because I call my dad Rusty and I have a debilitating skin condition... Thanks guys - Members: Russell Bush & Christopher Bush.
- Fringe Mcgee - They have fringes they need to address - Members: Claire Hoggarth & Millie Oliver
- Scrubbers - Pretty self explanatory really... and they do a lot of cleaning - Members: Faith Bush & Molly Hoggarth.
From now on I will (mostly) refer only to the teams, not the players themselves just for the sake of simplicity. This will be a short rundown compared to the League 2 rundown as we are only two matches in. Like League 2 what will follow subsequent to this rundown will be match by match summaries. But for now, let's get you all caught up.
The maiden voyage of the Team Championship was actually an unusually civil affair (from what I can recall), the match was played in the highest of spirits, as all Yahtzee matches should be played (but usually are not). The first match went to The Coke Heads, who gave a good showing, but, truth be told, there were not many points dividing the top three. Fringe Mcgee were a close second, Claire, the current league champion, was showing Millie what it felt like to be at the top of the table, and she liked it. Coming up the rear in third was Rusty Flakes. Russell took all of my advice with grace and dignity, despite a few expletives mumbled under his breath, while smiling through gritted teeth. The only disappointment in the match were The Scrubbers, who fared rather dismally, but to be fair the team is comprised of a newbie and a numpty. For now at least, they had cemented their place at the bottom of the table.
The second match came exactly one week later. The Coke Heads once again walked away victorious, which was annoying, but I guess that's just how it goes sometimes. Second place belonged to Rusty Flakes with a very good match. The cracks were already starting to show in Russell's patience, but I think even he would admit that my advice was making him a better player (possibly). Fringe Mcgee's so-so performance saw them slip to third in the table, but still very much in it. Not bad considering Claire is basically playing on her own (sorry, Millie). Still rooted to the bottom were The Scrubbers who gave another dire perfomance. We were beginning to wonder if either Molly or Faith were even awake when they were rolling.
And that, I regret to inform you, is where the curse of holidays and social lives intervened once more, and up to present, this is where we're at. But make no mistake, there is more to come, The Coke Heads are only in the lead by a mere 3 points, nothing for the likes of Rusty Flakes, if I do say so myself...
So, for now, Thanks for reading and keep your eyes open for more updates!!
