Dad vs. The Boy - A Fight For Masculine Supremacy - Match #1 - 04/05/25

Introduction
I love my son, Miles. He's a great kid in many ways, but, he's an annoying little git in many others. But I can't really blame him, I can't exactly deny that he gets all of his annoying traits directly from me, but it is because we are so similar we often tend to butt heads on a fairly common basis. Neither of us likes to be wrong and neither of us likes to back down. A recipe for disaster. To make things worse, we're both pretty bloody competitive. One of Miles's favourite quotes is "just coz you can't do it, dad!" So, of course I then have to prove that I can and I do... 50% of the time.
So I thought, why not just duke it out? Find out once and for all which one of us is superior? And, what better way for us to do that than with a good old long form Yahtzee battle? This is not an official BHO Championship, there are no badges to be won, just good old fashioned male pride. I also thought it would be a fun way to for us to learn a bit more about each other, that is if we don't kill each other first. So, follow along. I just hope I'm not sobbing on the ground in a pool of my own filth with a cocky teenager dancing a celebratory jig over me by the end of it!
All of this started with a casual text to my son when I felt a bit bored. I asked him if he fancied a quick game of Yahtzee. To my surprise, he said yes. To be clear, Miles does like Yahtzee, but he isn't as obsessed with it as his dad, so many times, when I ask him for a game, he usually says no. Plus, he's very busy. TikTok can be extremely time consuming. Anyway, by the time he had lolloped his way downstairs in that knuckle dragging way that most teenagers do, I had formulated the idea for this whole series. God, I am such a flipping genius.
Conversing with Miles can be a tricky road to travel, so before we started, I did a brief risk assessment. I had to gauge his mood, which must have been quite good because he actually agreed to play. Then I had to gauge how he was talking. This may seem like a weird one, but Miles has two chosen methods of talking; normal and mumbling as if he is trying to talk while simultaneously taking on the Jacob's Cream Cracker challenge. The latter can be an issue, because firstly, he denies he does it and secondly, woe betide anyone that asks him to repeat what he's said, even worse, mishear what he's said. This can lead to all kinds of problems. Finally I had to figure out what he was going to spend all the match talking to me about. He mostly chooses one subject and bangs on about it until he decides to leave the room. I mean, who does that? It's not like I spend my entire life talking about Yahtzee is it... ahem...
But all was well; he was in a good mood, speaking clearly and his chosen topic of conversation was music, which is better than talking about lizards. At least I'm clued up on music, whereas I know next to nothing about the procurement, care or even the lizards themselves. We were off to a good start. As soon as we had done all the necessary paperwork filled in and signed the necessary waivers, we were good to go!

Summary
Miles won the pre-match roll (highest number plays first) and right from the off it was a close match. Everything he scored, I would return with an extremely similar score. He did start to gain a slight lead on me at one point, but I soon caught back up. And that's how it went for the whole match. Until I got a Yahtzee, and I tell you what, if I hadn't, things could have ended very differently, or at least much, much, MUCH closer. During the match, Miles made it his mission to jabber at me about heavy metal music, and insisted on asking me whether I liked every band he could think of. This is fine, but I couldn't decide whether it was a tactic or not. You see, in large matches, Like League matches, he is the Strong, Silent player (post on it's way). He says nothing, doesn't get emotional and just gets on with the task at hand. Not this time. But luckily I was not to be distracted. So, in the end, I managed to take the victory. But it was certainly through no fault of Miles. He battled all the way. But, sometimes things just don't go your way.
For now, I'm one up, but there's a long way to go. It's a first to ten tournament, so it could still go either way, and it probably will knowing my luck.

Chris 1 - 0 Miles

Final Thoughts
It was a blast playing with Miles, and can't wait to play again, we don't do these things too often and it's a shame. We're both as bad as each other though, when I fancy a game, he doesn't and when he fancies a game, I don't. But hopefully now we've got a reason to get together on a semi regular basis. Not that we should need one. As for who is the manliest male in the house, well, that still remains to be seen.
